While Visa may agree that NFC smartcard contactless payments may be the future of m-commerce mobile payments, their approach is drastically different. The new AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile joint venture appears to be creating a vertically integrated, proprietary solution that aims to compete with Visa and Mastercard while the card brands appear to be pursuing a more open approach with their network of 15,700 financial institutions and tens of millions of merchants around the globe to deliver interoperable payment services to consumers with worldwide economies of scale.
